How the NDIS application process works

The NDIA's process has five parts. Here's what each involves, in plain language, with links to the NDIA's own pages.

Last checked against ndis.gov.au: 2 October 2026. The NDIA is updating its website for new legislation, so check the latest at ndis.gov.au (opens in a new tab).

1. Check you meet the basic requirements

To apply, you need to:

  • be younger than 65 on the day you apply
  • live in Australia and be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or a Protected Special Category visa holder
  • meet the disability requirements, the early intervention requirements, or both

The disability requirements are about a permanent impairment that substantially reduces your ability to do everyday activities, such as communicating, socialising, learning, moving around, looking after yourself or managing your life. The early intervention requirements are about getting support early to reduce your future needs, and include children younger than 6 with developmental delay.

2. Connect with an NDIS partner, if you'd like free help

NDIS partners are community organisations funded by the NDIA. Local area coordinators work with people aged 9 to 64, and early childhood partners work with families of children younger than 9. They can explain the process and help you apply at no cost. Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110 to find yours.

You can also get help from family, friends, your treating professionals, or a private provider such as ARG Care.

3. Gather your evidence and identity documents

Your treating health professional provides evidence of your disability and its impact on your daily life. The NDIA also checks your identity: usually three documents, including one that shows when you were born or arrived in Australia, plus a face-to-face identity check.

What evidence may be needed

4. Complete and submit the application

You can apply with your NDIS partner, or complete the NDIA's access request form. Section 1 is completed by you or your representative. Section 2 is for your treating health professional. You don't have to use the form if you're applying with a partner.

You can submit through the NDIA's service hub, by mail to NDIA, GPO Box 700, Canberra ACT 2601, or in person at an NDIA office or with your partner.

5. The NDIA makes its decision

The NDIA may ask for more information first. It then writes to tell you whether you're eligible, and under which requirements. If you're not eligible, the letter explains why and how to ask for a review. You can also apply again later if your situation changes or you have new evidence.

Where ARG Care fits

We can help at any of these steps: understanding the requirements, organising evidence, preparing the application and making sense of the decision. We can't decide eligibility, and we'll always tell you about free options.
