Applying for the NDIS
What to do if your NDIS application is unsuccessful
A 'no' isn't always the end of the road. Start with the decision letter, then decide whether to ask for a review or apply again.
Last checked against ndis.gov.au: 2 October 2026. The NDIA is updating its website for new legislation, so details may change.
In short
- Read the decision letter carefully. It explains why.
- You can ask the NDIA to review the decision. There's a time limit, so check your letter and act quickly.
- You can apply again at any time, for example with new evidence. There's no limit on how many times you apply.
Start with the letter
The NDIA's letter explains which requirements it decided you didn't meet. Often the reason is about the evidence: it might not show clearly enough how your disability affects your daily life, or it might be out of date.
Ask for a review
If you think the decision is wrong, you can ask the NDIA to review it. Your letter explains how, and the time limit for asking. If you still disagree after the NDIA's review, you may be able to apply to the Administrative Review Tribunal.
Free, independent disability advocates can help with reviews. We can help you understand the letter and organise information, but we don't give legal advice or represent people in reviews.
Or apply again
If your situation has changed, or you can get new evidence that answers the NDIA's concerns, you can apply again. There's no limit on the number of applications.
Questions worth asking
- Which requirement did the NDIA say wasn't met?
- Did my evidence describe the impact on my daily life, not just my diagnosis?
- Is my evidence recent, and from a professional who knows me well?
- Is there a treating professional I haven't asked yet?
