Applying for the NDIS
What happens after you submit your NDIS application
Once your application is in, the NDIA reviews it and writes to you with a decision. Here's what usually happens in between, and after.
Last checked against ndis.gov.au: 2 October 2026. The NDIA is updating its website for new legislation, so details may change.
In short
- The NDIA may contact you to check your identity or ask for more information.
- It writes to you with its decision.
- If you're eligible, you'll start working on your first plan. If not, the letter explains why and how to ask for a review.
The NDIA checks your application
The NDIA looks at your evidence against the eligibility requirements. It may contact you to confirm your identity, or to ask for more information. If it asks, reply as quickly as you can. Your treating professional may need to provide something extra.
How long it takes
The NDIA publishes its timeframes on ndis.gov.au (opens in a new tab). It's updating its website for new legislation, so check there for the current timeframe. Requests for more information can add time.
If you're eligible
The NDIA will write to tell you you're a participant, and whether you met the disability requirements, the early intervention requirements, or both. It may also send an impairment notice, which sets out the impairments it has accepted. Keep these letters safe.
Next, you'll work with the NDIA or your NDIS partner on your first plan. Once your plan is approved, you choose your providers.
Your choice, always. If your application is successful, you're free to choose the providers that are right for you. Using ARG Care for application help doesn't require you to use ARG Care for future supports.
If you're not eligible
The letter explains why. You can ask the NDIA to review the decision, or apply again later with new evidence. See what to do if your application is unsuccessful.
